Overview
|
Set in 1938, The Sound of Music, is based on Maria Von Trapp’s autobiography
The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Maria Rainer is a free-spirited nun whose
love of freedom makes it obvious to her superiors that she is not suited for
religious life. Thus, she is sent off to be the governess to Captain
Georg Von Trapp’s seven troublesome children. Unlike previous governesses,
Maria becomes
friends with the children due to their mutual love of music. Soon even the
strict Captain, who is engaged to Elsa, a wealthy socialite, begins to admire
Maria.
Eventually, the Captain and Maria fall in love and are married. Unfortunately,
when the Nazis invade their Austrian homeland, the whole family is forced to
flee over the Alps to escape.
With The Sound of Music, the epoch-making collaboration of Richard Rodgers
(1902-1979) and
Oscar Hammerstein II (1895-1960) came to an end. Hammerstein passed away nine months after
the
November 16, 1959 opening of this classic which would eventually become the
second longest running Broadway musical of the fifties. The original production
featured Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. The 1965 film version co-starred Julie
Andrews and Christopher Plummer. A successful 1998 Broadway revival starred
Rebecca Luker.
The celebrated score includes the well-known favorites The Sound of Music,
My Favorite Things,
Do-Re-Mi, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, and
Edelweiss.
