Charleston Light Opera Guild will present the global phenomenon, Jesus Christ Superstar, at the Charleston Civic Center Little Theater on November 4, 5, 11, 12. 18 and 19 at 7:30 pm and on November 13 at 2:00 pm.
Jesus Christ Superstar was initially conceived in 1970 as a concept album with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. The sung-through musical is based on rock music and received its first Broadway staging in 1971. Innumerable national and international staged and concert performances have wowed audiences for over forty years.
The story is loosely based on the Gospels' accounts of the last week of the life of Jesus Christ told from the perspective of Judas, the disciple who eventually betrays Jesus and turns him into the Roman authorities. The story was hailed as a rock opera and uses 1970's style music, slang and cultural references. Webber and Rice wanted the music to emphasize the relationships between friends, enemies and followers during a pivotal moment in history.
