HAIRSPRAY is a musical with music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, and a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. The songs include 1960’s style dance music and ‘downtown’ rhythm and blues. In 1962 Baltimore, Tracy Turnblad, our loveable plus-sized heroine with big hair and a kind heart, has only one passion -- to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, The Corny Collins Show and is quickly transformed into a teen celebrity. Tracy then successfully sets out to vanquish the program’s reigning princess, win the heart of the super handsome Link Larkin, and racially integrate the television show.
Based on the 1988 John Waters movie of the same name, the original Broadway production opened in the fall of 2002 and won eight Tony awards, including Best Musical. After running for over 2,500 performances, the show has had US national tours, a London West End production, numerous foreign productions, and was adapted for a 2007 musical film. The tuneful score includes such great songs as “Good Morning Baltimore”. “Welcome to the 60’s”, “Big, Blonde, and Beautiful”, “Timeless to Me”, “Without Love” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat”.
