To celebrate its 65th anniversary and to honor 40 years of Youth Theater, the Charleston Light Opera Guild will present a special performance of Godspell on Friday, February 7, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. at the Guild Theatre, followed by a reception with the Guild's special guest, Grammy award winner Kathy Mattea, a member of the cast of the Guild's original production of Godspell. Tickets for this special event will be $50.00 through the Guild box office.
Godspell was first produced on Broadway in 1971 and broke new ground in its stage treatment of the historical Jesus Christ. Conceived and originally directed by John Michael Tebelak and based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew, it features a sparkling score by Stephen Schwartz. Godspell boasts a string of well-loved songs led by the international hit “Day by Day.” As the cast performs “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord,” “Learn Your Lessons Well,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man” and “By My Side,” the parables of Jesus Christ come humanly and hearteningly to life.
Drawing from various theatrical traditions, such as clowning, pantomime, charades, acrobatics and vaudeville, Godspell is a groundbreaking and unique reflection on the life of Jesus, with a message of kindness, tolerance and love. The Guild previously produced Godspell in 1975 and 1994. This production will be the revised 2012 version, incorporating some the changes and updated references used in the 2011-12 Broadway production.
