Dreamgirls

DreamgirlsIt’s 1962 and the Dreamettes, a hopeful girl group from Chicago, enter the Amateur Night talent competition at the famed Apollo Theatre in Harlem. So begins Act I of Dreamgirls – a vivid portrait of a pivotal era in American history when the music was indicative of the altering landscape of the country. We were still screaming at Elvis and listening to the Beatles, but were dancing to the new beat of groups like “The Shirelles”, “The Temptations”, “The Marvelettes” and “The Supremes”. One of the central themes of Dreamgirls explores the rise of the Rhythm & Blues and Soul sounds that dominated the ‘60’s and the black performers who were the faces and voices of this musical revolution. Act II is about the arrival of disco.  Dreamgirls portrays the performing and business side of the entertainment industry. We get a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes world of the singers who learn anything is possible if you hold on to your dreams.

Dreamgirls originated in 1982 and received six Tony Awards. With a book and lyrics by Tom Eyen and music by Henry Kreiger, it was directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett. The Broadway production has seen several reincarnations, international productions, and national and international tours. The latest national tour debuted at the Apollo Theatre in January 2009.  An acclaimed movie with Beyonce Knowles, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson was released in 2006 and won a Golden Globe for best picture and 2 Academy Awards.
