The Bridges of Madison County is a musical based on one of the most romantic stories ever written. The Charleston Light Opera Guild will present this two-time Tony Award winning musical during FestivALL Charleston 2017 at the Charleston Light Opera Guild Theatre on June 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, and 25.
Based on the best-selling novel by Robert James Waller, The Bridges of Madison County, tells the story of Iowa housewife Francesca Johnson and her life-changing, four-day whirlwind romance with traveling photographer Robert Kincaid. It's an unforgettable story of two people caught between duty and desire, as a unexpected encounter becomes a second chance at so much more. The musical features stunning music by Tony Award winning composer Jason Robert Brown that draws upon the rich textures of Americana and folk and the expressive balladry of classic Broadway. The book is by Pulitzer Prize Winner Marcia Norman. The 2014 Broadway production starred Kelli O'Hara as Francesca and Steven Pasquale as Robert. The 1995 film version directed by Clint Eastwood was well received. It starred Meryl Streep and Eastwood and earned another Academy Award for Meryl Streep.
Francesca is a dedicated, Iowan housewife, living a simple, yet dispassionate, life. Everything changes when her family goes on a trip to the State Fair in Indianapolis, leaving Francesca behind to take care of the house. Francesca is taken aback by a handsome National Geographic photographer named Robert, who asks for directions to the covered bridges of Madison County. The two connect, starting an emotional four-day love affair that has repercussions long after it's over.
The Charleston Light Opera Guild Production of The Bridges of Madison County is sponsored by the Alex & Betty Schoenbaum Foundation. The production is made possible for FestivALL by The University of Charleston.
