Overview

Rent is a rock opera that tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of AIDS.  For readers who like to know the complete story of the show before seeing it performed, click for details on Wikipedia.

The musical was first seen in a limited three-week workshop run at the New York Theatre Workshop in 1994. This same off-Broadway theatre was also the musical’s initial home following its official January 25, 1996, opening. Tragically, the show’s creator, Jonathan Larson, died suddenly the night before the off-Broadway premiere. The show won a Pulitzer Prize, and the production was a hit. The musical moved to Broadway’s larger Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996.  On Broadway, Rent gained critical acclaim and won numerous awards including Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score and Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical and 6 Drama Desk Awards. The musical brought an ethnically diverse cast and controversial topics to a traditionally conservative medium, helping to increase the popularity of musical theatre amongst the younger generation. The success of the show led to several national tours and numerous foreign productions. It was also adapted into a 2005 motion picture that featured most of the original cast members (including Taye Diggs, Jesse L. Martin, Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp.) The Broadway production closed on September 7, 2006 after a 12-year run. The final performance was captured on film and released as Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway.

The score includes such melodic and instantly memorable songs as Seasons of Love, La Vie Boheme, One Song Glory and the uplifting Light My Candle.
