Overview
The
Producers is a comedy-musical adapted by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan from
Brooks’ 1968 film of the same name. As
in the film, the story is centered around two theatrical producers who
scheme to get rich by overselling interests in a Broadway flop.
The producers hire a Nazi to compose a comedy musical so utterly absurd that
they can run off with their gullible old lady clients' money after an
opening-night flop. Complications arise when the show unexpectedly
turns out be a success. A full synopsis is available here at
Wikipedia.
The musical opened on Broadway on April 19,
2001 and ran for 2,502 performances, winning a record-breaking 12 Tony
awards. It spawned a successful London production, running for three years
and a 2005 motion picture plus international productions and national tours.
Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick starred in the original Broadway cast and
in the musical film adaptation.
The humor of the show is accessible to a
wide range of audiences and draws on ridiculous accents, caricatures, and
show business in-jokes. There is quick-witted dialogue, hilarious lyrics, and
outrageous choreography. Songs include I Want to Be a Producer,
When You’ve Got It, Flaunt It, Springtime for Hitler, and Prisoners of
Love. |
