Overview
Grease
evokes the memories of circular
poodle skirts, duck tail hairdos and hot rods at the drive-in movie and was
votes "Best Musical of All Time" in a 2003 national television poll.
It’s 1959 and Rydell High is filled
with rebellious, thrill-loving students. In the midst of this scene, Sandy
Dumbrowski enters as the new girl in school. It turns out that she and the
leader of the Burger Palace Boys gang, Danny Zuko, have had a brief love affair
the summer before. The students deal with teen groups, friendship, pajama
parties, drag races and music that sounds like the hits of the Fabulous 50’s and
60’s Rock and Roll eras.
Grease premiered on Broadway in
1972 and ran for 3,385 performances. It was made into a popular movie with John
Travolta and Olivia Newton-John and has had major Broadway revivals in 1994 and
2007. The current Broadway revival stars Laura Osnes and Max Crumm as Sandy
and Danny. They won the 2007 reality TV competition of Grease:
You’re The One That I Want.
The Guild last produced the show as a
main-stage production at the Civic Center Little Theater in 1980. It was later
produced at the East Side Guild Workshop and West side Guild Theatre in 1986 and
2000.
