Overview
|
Richard
Rodgers and
Oscar Hammerstein’s
Cinderella
is a fresh and exciting adaptation of the classic fairy tale that brings adventure
and romance to the stage. With its time-tested stpry, melodic score, colorful costumes, magical professional sets, full
orchestra, cute mice, cat and white bird puppets, and its attractive
colorblind cast including an exotic fairy godmother and stepsisters played
by 2 men in broad comedic gender bending roles, this a show for the entire
family.
The tale of
Cinderella goes back to at least 700 AD in China and has at
over 800 variations from every part of the world. We are most
familiar with derivations of the French version of the story. The Disney
animated film was introduced in the early 1950’s and then
Rodgers and
Hammerstein created a version for CBS television in 1957. The live
color telecast
starred new Broadway sensation Julie Andrews and reached an audience of over
120 million viewers and was the highest rated show in TV history up to that
point. The show has been reincarnated several times on stage and screen.
Notable revisions include the 1960s TV version starring Lesley Ann Warren,
the 1990’s Wonderful World of Disney TV remake starring Brandy and Whitney
Houston and the more recent theatre tour headlined by The Sopranos’
Jamie-Lynn Discala.
Cinderella is filled with
the beautiful ballads and comic ditties at which Rodgers and
Hammerstein excelled: In My Own Little Corner, Impossible, Do
I Love You (Because You’re Beautiful) and Ten Minutes Ago. The
book and lyrics provide a show with the perfect blend of humor and heart for
young and old.
The show was last produced by
the Guild in 1996. |
