Guys and Dolls brings to life
the unsavory characters of the Damon Runyon stories in delightful fashion.
After its Broadway opening in November 1950, it became one of Broadway’s
most enduring successes, running 1,194 performances and inspiring
successful revivals all over the world (including three to date on Broadway).
Desperate to find money to pay for his
floating crap game, Nathan Detroit bets Sky Masterson a thousand dollars
that Sky will not be able to take a local Salvation Army girl, Sarah Brown,
to Cuba. While Sky eventually is able to convince Sarah to join him, Nathan
battles with his fiancé of 14 years, Adelaide, who headlines at the Hot Box
Club.
The show won 8 Tony awards including best musical. This “fable of
Broadway” is timeless and has been described at the perfect American
musical.
The Ruynonesque characters include mob men, chorus girls, gamblers
and racetrack hustlers of the Broadway that he knew and loved. Runyon
captured with an acute eye and ear the colorful lives and language of a
bygone era, one that lives on in our imagination – and on stage.
The score includes Fugue for Tinhorns, I’ll Know, Adelaide’s Lament,
Guys
and Dolls, If I Were a Bell, I’ve Never Been in Love Before,
Luck Be a
Lady, Sue Me, and Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat.
The Guild last produced the show
in 1992. |
